In India, an individual shall file an income tax return if his total income earned during a financial year exceeds the exemption limit given under the Income Tax Act. Individuals or other persons like HUF, Partnership Firms, etc, shall file their Income Tax Return through Income Tax Website. A person shall first register on the Income Tax website before he/she file the income tax return. The procedure to register on the Income Tax website is as follows.

Step 1: Go to Income Tax India E-Filing Website
The Filing of Income Tax return is done through https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. This is an only official portal for filing an income tax return.
Step 2: Register Yourself
Click on “Register Yourself” button on the upper right corner to register.
Step 3: Select the User Type
At next select the status/type of the taxpayer i.e. whether it is an individual, a company, Hindu Undivided Family, Partnership Firm, etc.
Step 4: Provide basic details of the taxpayer
At next enter the required details of the taxpayer viz. the PAN Number, Surname, Middle Name, First Name, Date of birth/Date of Incorporation and residential status. Make sure all these details are as printed on PAN No.
Step 5: Provide Additional Information
At the next step, the taxpayer shall provide following details:
- the password to access the website. The ID is Pan no.
- two secret questions from the drop-down and provide their answers. This can be used to reset the password in case you forgot it.
- provide required contact details i.e. email id, mobile no, address.
- Click on continue and then on confirm
Step 5: Activate the account
At last, Enter the OTP received on Primary EMAIL & Mobile No. and click on Validate.
